The Industrial Trades Neighborhood

In general, Dortin’s commercial areas are scattered among other buildings in the blocks of the city’s core. Other than The Merchant Halls, the only other exclusively commercial part of the city is an area of several blocks on Lake Street devoted to industrial trades like forges, tanneries, and alchemical workshops. Here there are the city’s main meat packers, The No Questions Asked Slaughterhouse. This block just west of Soldiers’ Palace on Lake Street is where most of Dortin’s less sightly businesses are located. Dominated by the Mysterious Wonders of Alchemy workshop complex, this area also features the city’s tannery and a candle factory, as well as the Melanton bar called The Pikeman’s Pints.

Because this is a no-nonsense, blue-collar type of place, and nonhumans have to work somewhere, this neighborhood can be considered an exception to the racial customs in the city, including the rules about gray-market transactions. People here are more concerned with making things than with obeying every little rule of socially acceptable behavior. Plus, this is Melanton land, and Ben Melanton is no friend of The Watch Detectives, who aren’t usually found this far west anyway. Humans can mingle with Dwarves and Elves here mostly without fear, as long as you dont mind the stench from the tannery. In fact, all races are employed by the manufacturers in this neighborhood – but they go back to their own neighborhoods after dark.
