Dortin’s main residential neighborhoods for Humans are arrayed on the fringes of the city’s core. The northern half of The Valley is often called Soldiers’ Beach, in reference to the military housing that stood here in the Imperial period, and the fact that Dortin’s other popular beaches are located here, as well as its only Public Boat Launch.
Soldiers’ Beach is a middle-class neighborhood on the riverbank between Lake Street and The Valley, named for the subsidized housing for military families that once stood there. Even today, this is the heart of the Karel neighborhoods and the source of the simple, upright citizens who are the backbone of their forces. The residents of this neighborhood work hard, drink at The Continental and sit on the beach with their families in the evenings. Streets are narrow (10’) but well maintained, clean and flat, and lit with torches.
