Dortin’s main residential neighborhoods for Humans are arrayed on the fringes of the city’s core. On the south, almost everything below Alaster Compound is deserted, for good reason. This area, known as the Saints’ Fountain neighborhood after the city’s war memorial located there, is said to be haunted. The neighborhood contains Dortin’s war memorial, a hulking bronze statue of Continental horsemen forming the centerpiece of a large fountain that has operated continuously since the fifth century. The fountain pours steaming hot water, even in the coldest weather of winter, and in the heat of summer its water is ice cold. ‘Saints’ is a term used by the townspeople for someone who has died in combat. The neighborhood around the fountain, of the same name, was once heavily populated by the working-class of Dortin, who lived in huge multistory blocks of row houses, now ruined and collapsing. The frequent sieges resulted in the emptying of Saints’ Fountain over a number of years; monsters crept in from outside the city and drove away the last of its occupants by the time of the Northern War.
