Elves are rare in Dortin, and they are the least tolerated of the nonhuman races in the city, though still above Natives in the racial hierarchy observed by conservative citizens. Though not actually legally prohibited, Elves almost never live and work openly outside their own neighborhood of Treetown and nearby areas such as The Free Market. Only in very conservative areas like Soldiers’ Beach are they in any physical danger, but most people east of The Stone Road consider them out of place. A few very old families were established in Dortin by the end of the fifth century, having built the first dwellings in Treetown when it was then just a forested area well outside the village limits. However, most arrived before and during the Northern War almost four centuries later. Elves suffer from the popular impression, born during the Northern War, that they are Native allies. See The Player’s Introduction for special benefits that apply to Elven PC’s, to compensate for the risks of playing such a character. Suitably disguised, an elf can pass for a human and vice versa.
